Hyundai's high-performance automatic transmission has four forward gears and one reverse gear. Gear shifting is carried out automatically depending on the position of the selector. The selector lever has the usual switching algorithm shown in the figure.
At night, when the parking lights and headlights are turned on, the indicators on the gearbox panel automatically light up.
Attention: While the vehicle is moving, the selector lever must not be moved to the «R» or «R».
Note:
- To move the selector, press the button while pressing the brake pedal.
- Click the button to move the selector.
- You don't need to press the button to move the selector.
When making the first few shifts on a new car, or for the first time after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery terminals, there may be delays in shifting gears. This is normal, gear shifting will become smooth again after the transmission control unit has completed several automatic shift cycles.
The selector lever positions have the following function:
«R» («Parking»): Used to hold the car in place while parking and when starting the engine. In all cases, when parking the car, apply the parking brake and set the selector lever to the position «R».
Attention: It is forbidden to set the selector lever to the position «R» until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Failure to do so may cause serious damage to the transmission.
«R» («Rear» move): Reverse gear position. Set the selector lever to position «R» only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
«N» («neutral»): With this lever position, the transmission is in neutral. At the position «N» selector lever, you can start the engine. However, this is not recommended unless the engine has stalled while the vehicle is moving.
«D» («Movement»): Normal driving position during which all four forward gears are automatically shifted.
«3» - Third gear: (1,8/2,0 DOHC) Use this mode when driving on slippery roads, when driving uphill, or for engine braking when going downhill. When the selector lever is in position «3», the transmission automatically shifts between first, second and third gears. This means that there will be no shifting to fourth gear. However, fourth gear may be engaged when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed in order to avoid exceeding the maximum allowable engine speed. When returning to normal driving conditions, move the selector to the position «D».
«2» - Second gear: Use this mode when driving on slippery roads, when driving uphill, or for engine braking when going downhill. When the selector lever is in position «2», the transmission automatically shifts between first and second gears. This means that there will be no shifting to third gear. However, third gear may be engaged when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed in order to avoid exceeding the maximum allowable engine speed. When returning to normal driving conditions, move the selector to the position «D».
«L» - Low gear: This mode is used when going up a steep hill or when using engine braking on a steep hill. When switching to «L» the gearbox will remain in second gear for a while until the vehicle speed decreases enough to shift into a lower gear (first) transmission. Do not exceed 50 km/h in low gear «L» When the selector lever is in position «L», the transmission automatically shifts to first gear. However, it is possible to shift to second gear when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, if the speed continues to increase, third gear will be engaged to avoid exceeding the maximum engine speed.
Note:
- To ensure smooth and safe operation, before moving the selector out of position «R» (Parking) or «N» (neutral position) into reverse gear, fully depress the brake pedal.
- To move the selector from position «R» («Parking») in any other position, fully depress the brake pedal.
- Translate selector from positions «R» («Reverse»), «N» (neutral position), «D» («Movement»),
- «3» (1.8/2.0 DOHC), «2», «L» into position «R» («Parking») you can always. In this case, the car must be completely stopped so as not to damage the gearbox.
Attention:
- While the vehicle is moving, do not move the selector lever to the position «R» or «R».
- Do not depress the accelerator pedal while the transmission is in reverse or one of the forward gears with the brake pedal depressed.
- Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the selector from positions «R» or «N» into the provisions «R», «D», «3» (1.8/2.0 DOHC), «2» or «L».
- Don't use position «R» («Parking») instead of a parking brake. Even when you leave the vehicle for a short time, always apply the parking brake, move the selector to the «R» («Parking») and turn off the ignition. Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running.
- Check the ATF level in the automatic transmission regularly and top up if necessary.
Proper driving techniques
Do not move the selector lever from the position «R» or «N» to any other position with the accelerator pedal depressed.
Do not set the selector lever to the position «R» while the car is moving.
Set the selector lever to position «R» only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
Do not place the transmission in neutral while driving downhill. This can be extremely dangerous.
When driving downhill, do not maintain the desired speed by constantly braking. This will cause the brakes to overheat and reduce their effectiveness. On a long downhill, use engine braking by slowing down and shifting into one of the lower gears to maintain the desired speed.
Reduce speed before shifting into lower gears, otherwise the lower gear may not engage.
Always apply the parking brake when stopping and parking. Do not rely on the reliability of holding the car in place when «R» gearboxes.
Exercise extreme caution when driving on slippery ground, especially when braking, accelerating and shifting gears. Rapid changes in speed on slippery surfaces can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and cause the vehicle to spin out of control.
Warning:
- Reduce speed in turns.
- Avoid sudden manoeuvres, including sudden lane changes or sharp turns at high speed.
- Always fasten your seat belt.
- The risk of the vehicle overturning due to loss of vehicle control increases significantly at high speeds.
- Vehicle control is often lost when two or more wheels come off hard pavement onto soft ground and the driver turns the steering wheel hard to bring the vehicle back onto the road.
- If the vehicle has left the roadway, do not make sudden steering movements and reduce speed before returning the vehicle to the lane.
- When a car collides with an obstacle, the risk of death is much higher for passengers who are not wearing seat belts than for those who are.
- Do not exceed the speed limit indicated on road signs.
