Fig. 1.182. Automatic transmission selector lever
The high-performance automatic transmission has four forward gears and one reverse gear. Gear shifting is automatic depending on the selector position. The selector lever has two slots: the main slot and the slot for manual shifting.
The main slot for moving the gear selector has four positions.
Note: Press the brake pedal while shifting gears.
Note: The shift lever should shift freely.
Note: During the vehicle's break-in period or immediately after connecting the cable to the battery terminal, gear shifting may not be as smooth. This does not indicate a fault in the transmission. Gear shifting will become smooth after several shifts in automatic mode (by the automatic transmission electronic control unit).
Caution! While the vehicle is moving, do not move the selector lever to the "R" or "P" position.
The indicator lamps on the instrument panel are designed to indicate the position of the automatic transmission selector, and one of these lamps lights up when the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position. When the selector is in the "D" (Drive, main gear) position, the indicator lamp for the currently engaged gear lights up green.
Selector Position Assignments

"P" - Parking.
Use this position to hold the vehicle in place while parked or starting the engine. When parking the vehicle, apply the parking brake and move the selector lever to the "P" (Park) position.
Caution! Do not move the selector to the "P" ("Park") position until the vehicle is completely stopped. Failure to do so may result in damage to the automatic transmission.
"R" – Reverse.
Use this position to reverse. Move the selector lever to the "R" (Reverse) position only after the car has come to a complete stop.
"N" – Neutral position.
In this position of the selector the automatic transmission is disengaged. It is possible to start the engine in this position, however it is not recommended, except in cases when the engine stalls while driving
"D" – Movement.
This mode is used for driving, one of four/five gears is automatically engaged.
Manual gear shift mode ("Sports mode")
Fig. 1.184. Manual gear shifting mode
Regardless of whether the vehicle is moving or stationary, switching to manual gear shifting mode is done by moving the automatic transmission selector from the "D" ("Drive") position to the manual gear selection slot. To return to the "D" mode, it is necessary to move the selector back to the main slot. In manual gear shifting mode, it is possible to quickly change gears by moving the selector back or forward. Unlike a manual transmission, manual mode ("Sports mode") allows gear shifting while the accelerator pedal is pressed.
UP (+): Move the selector forward once, this will engage an upshift.
DOWN (–): Move the selector backwards once to engage a lower gear.
GEAR SHIFTING: A quick double movement of the selector allows you to skip one gear when shifting, i.e. to go from 1st to 3rd gear, or from 3rd to 1st.
Attention! In manual mode, there is no automatic upshift. The driver must engage the upshift according to road conditions and ensure that the engine crankshaft speed does not exceed the maximum permissible value (the tachometer needle must be below the red zone).
Attention! In order to protect the engine, the gearbox shifts up automatically when the engine speed reaches the red zone.
Caution! Quickly moving the selector backwards (Down) twice allows you to skip one gear when shifting, i.e. from 3rd to 1st, from 4th to 2nd or from 5th to 3rd. Since sharp engine braking and/or rapid acceleration can cause loss of traction, downshifting should be done carefully, in accordance with the speed of the car.
Caution! In manual mode, only one of four/five forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector to the "R" ("Reverse") or "P" ("Park") position, respectively.
In manual mode, when the vehicle speed decreases, the transmission automatically downshifts. When the vehicle stops, the transmission automatically shifts to 1st gear.
To ensure the required vehicle dynamics and safety, the system may not perform some gear changes when the selector lever is moved.
When starting off on a slippery road, move the automatic transmission selector forward to the "+" (Up) position. This engages 2nd gear, making starting off on a slippery road easier. Moving the selector to the "-" (Down) position shifts to 1st gear.
To ensure smooth and safe operation, fully depress the brake pedal before shifting the selector lever from the "P" (Park) or "N" (Neutral) position to the reverse gear position.
To move the selector lever from the "P" (Park) position to any other position, the ignition key must be in the "ON" position and the brake pedal must be fully depressed.
You can always move the selector from the positions "R" ("Reverse"), "N" (Neutral position), "D" ("Drive", main gear) to the position "P" ("Park"). In this case, the car must be completely stopped so as not to damage the gearbox.
Caution! While the vehicle is moving, do not move the selector lever to the "R" or "P" position.
Caution: Do not press the accelerator pedal when the transmission is in reverse or one of the forward gears with the brake pedal depressed.
Caution: Always press the brake pedal when moving the selector from the "P" (Park) or "N" (Neutral) positions to the "R" (Reverse) or "D" (Drive, main gear) positions.
Warning! Do not use the "P" ("Park") position instead of the parking brake. Even when leaving the vehicle for a short time, always apply the parking brake, move the selector to the "P" ("Park") position and turn off the ignition. Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running.
Caution! When starting off on a steep incline, the car may roll backwards. To prevent this from happening, move the selector to position "2" when starting off in sport mode.
Caution: Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly and add fluid if necessary.
Unlocking the automatic transmission selector (additional equipment)
Fig. 1.185. Unlocking the automatic transmission selector
If the automatic transmission selector does not move from the "P" ("Park") position to any other position when the brake pedal is fully depressed and the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position, do the following. Remove the cover on the console and use a thin object, such as a flat screwdriver, to press the selector release button. Then, pressing the brake pedal, move the selector to the desired position. The selector release button will automatically return to its original position after the transmission is moved from the "P" (Park) position. Then replace the cover on the console.
Correct driving techniques
Do not move the selector lever from the "N" or "P" position to any other position while the accelerator pedal is depressed.
While the vehicle is moving, the selector lever must not be moved to the "P" position.
Before moving the selector lever to the "R" position, make sure the vehicle is completely stopped.
Do not roll downhill in neutral. It is very dangerous. Always keep the gear engaged while the vehicle is moving.
Avoid driving in a manner that requires sudden braking. This will cause the brakes to overheat and become less effective. On long descents, engine braking (including lower gears) should be used to prevent the brakes from overheating.
When shifting into a lower gear, apply the brakes slightly. Otherwise, the lower gear may not engage.
Always use the parking brake. Do not rely on shifting the selector lever to the "P" position to prevent the vehicle from moving.
Be especially careful when driving on slippery roads. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating and changing gears. On slippery roads, a sudden change in vehicle speed can cause the vehicle to lose traction and control over the vehicle.
The optimal style of economical driving, which most effectively uses the engine's performance characteristics, is the style in which the driver lightly presses and releases the accelerator pedal.
