Removal

1. Disconnect the suction hose and the positive crankcase ventilation hose.

2. Remove the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley.

3. Remove the timing belt cover.

4. Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley and temporarily secure it.

5. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft sprocket.

6. Loosen the center cover bolts and then remove the center cover.

7. Remove the ignition coil assembly.

8. Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and then remove the cylinder head cover.

9. Remove the camshaft sprocket.

10. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and timing belt chain.

11. Remove the camshaft.

Examination

Camshafts

1. Check the camshaft journals for wear. If the journals are heavily worn, replace the camshaft.

2. Check the cam lobe for damage. If the projections are damaged or severely worn, replace the camshaft.

Cam height

Exhaust valve
Standard - 44.449 mm Limit - 43.949 mm
Exhaust valve
Standard - 45.049 mm Limit - 44.549 mm

3. Check the cam surface for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

4. Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively worn, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap as necessary.

Axial clearance of the camshaft - 0.1-0.2 mm

Seal (before camshaft)

1. Check the seal edges for wear. If the threads are worn out, replace the seal.

2. Check the contact surface of the camshaft with the edges of the oil seal. Replace the camshaft if it is worn out.

Installation

1. Install the hydraulic clearance adjuster (HLA).

2. Align the timing mark on the camshaft chain with the mark on the camshaft sprocket for the intake valves, and the other mark on the chain with the mark on the camshaft sprocket for the exhaust valves.

3. Install the camshaft after lubricating its journals with engine oil.

4. Install the bearing caps. Follow the markings on the covers to identify the intake and exhaust camshafts.
  • I: Intake camshaft.
  • E: Exhaust camshaft.

5. Tighten the bearing caps evenly in 2-3 steps to the required torque.

5. Tighten the bearing caps evenly in 2-3 steps to the required torque.

Tightening torque
  • Bearing cap bolt - 14-15 Nm

6. Using a special tool, a device for installing a camshaft oil seal (09221-21000), press in the camshaft oil seal. Make sure engine oil is applied to the outer surface of the seal.

Place the seal on the front end of the camshaft and install it by moving the seal installer with a hammer until the seal is fully seated.

7. Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
  • Camshaft sprocket bolt - 100-120 Nm

8. Align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. The piston of cylinder No. 1 must be at the top dead center of the compression stroke.

9. Install the cylinder head cover.

Tightening torque
  • Cylinder head cover bolts - 8-10 Nm

10. Install the spark plug wires, ignition coil center cover assembly.

11. Install the timing belt and tighten the timing belt tensioner pulley.

12. Install the timing belt cover.

13. Install the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley.
