Lever positions for automatic transmission
Hyundai's high-performance automatic transmission has four forward gears and one reverse gear. It has a conventional shift pattern shown in Figure 117. At night, in the first position of the multi-function switch in the shift pattern, the indicator corresponding to the selected gear range will be lit.
Warning! While the vehicle is moving, do not move the selector lever to the position "R" or "R".
To move the selector, press the button while depressing the brake pedal.
The button must be pressed to move the selector.
You do not need to press the button to move the selector.
For maximum fuel economy, accelerate smoothly. The automatic transmission will automatically shift into second, third and overdrive.
Selector position assignments
"R" – Parking
Use this position to hold the vehicle in place while parking or starting the engine. When parking the vehicle, apply the parking brake and move the selector to the "R" (Parking).
Warning! Do not move the selector to position "R" (Parking), until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Failure to follow this rule may result in damage to the automatic transmission.
"R" - Reverse:
Use this position to drive in reverse. Move the selector lever to position "R" (Reverse) only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
"N" – Neutral position:
In this selector position, the automatic transmission is disabled. The engine can be started in this position, but this is not recommended unless the engine has stalled while the vehicle is moving.
"D" – "Movement", main gear:
This position of the automatic transmission selector lever is the main position for driving. The automatic transmission will automatically shift into one of four gears for better economy and power. If the vehicle speed exceeds 95 km/h, never move the selector to the "2" (Second gear) or "L" (Downshift).
"2" – Second gear:
Use this position for driving on slippery roads, climbing steep grades, and for engine braking when descending steep grades. In this position of the selector, there is an automatic switching between 1st and 2nd gears. This means that there is no shifting to 3rd gear. However, if the vehicle speed exceeds a certain value, it shifts to 3rd gear to prevent excessive engine acceleration. Translation of the selector into position "D" ("Movement") returns normal gear shifting.
"L" – Downshift:
This position of the automatic transmission selector lever is essential when driving on very steep grades and for engine braking at low speeds when descending steep grades. When downshifting "L", the transmission will temporarily remain in second gear range until the vehicle decelerates to a speed where downshifting is possible "L". When driving in "L" – ("Downshift") do not exceed 50 km/h.
Warning! For smooth and safe gear shifting, when moving the selector from the position "N" or "R" fully depress the brake pedal before shifting into gear.
Warning! To move the selector from position "N" or "R" in any other position, fully depress the brake pedal.
Warning! You can always translate the selector from position "R", "N", "D", "2", "L" into position "R".
Warning! Move the selector to position "R" or "R" only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
Warning! Do not increase the engine speed when the selector is in the reverse gear position or one of the driving positions with the brake pedal depressed.
Warning! When translating the selector from the position "N" or provisions "R" to another position "R", "D", "2", or "L" always press the brake pedal.
Warning! Don't use position "R" instead of a parking brake. Always apply the parking brake, move the selector to the "R" and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, even for a second. Do not leave the car unattended when the engine is running.
Warning! Regularly check the fluid level in the automatic transmission and add fluid if necessary.
Proper driving techniques
Don't move the selector out of position "N" or "R" to any other position with the accelerator pedal depressed.
While the vehicle is moving, do not move the selector lever to the position "R".
Before moving the selector to position "R", make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
Do not roll downhill in neutral. It is very dangerous. Always keep the gear engaged while the vehicle is in motion.
Avoid a driving style with frequent hard braking, and do not keep your left foot on the brake pedal all the time while driving. This leads to overheating of the brakes and loss of their efficiency.
On long descents, engine braking should be applied to prevent overheating of the brakes (including low gears).
When shifting into a lower gear, slow down the vehicle slightly. Otherwise, the downshift may not engage.
Always use the parking brake. Don't rely on setting the selector to "R" to prevent vehicle movement.
Be especially careful when driving on slippery roads when braking, accelerating and shifting gears. On slippery roads, sudden changes in vehicle speed can cause the vehicle to lose traction and control of the vehicle.
Engage the overdrive switch for good fuel economy and a smooth ride. If necessary, engine braking in the range "D" or if you need to repeatedly shift between 3rd and 4th gears while climbing a slight slope, it is recommended to disengage the overdrive. Then turn on the overdrive switch.
Warning! Loss of control of the vehicle at high speeds greatly increases the risk of the vehicle rolling over.
Warning! Loss of control often occurs when two or more wheels go off the road and the driver tries to get the vehicle back on the road.
Warning! If your vehicle has left the track, avoid turning the steering wheel sharply. Instead, slow down your vehicle before re-entering the road.
When the overdrive switch is turned on, the transmission will automatically shift into 2nd, 3rd and upshifts. When the overdrive switch is in the position "OFF" (Off), overdrive will not be engaged. Under normal conditions, the movement selector should be in position "D", and the overdrive switch must be on. If you need to make a sharp acceleration, press the accelerator pedal to the stop. The transmission will automatically downshift depending on vehicle speed and load.
