1. Turn off the road and stop in a safe place.
2. Set the selector lever to position "P" (in a car with an automatic transmission) or turn on neutral (in a car with an automatic transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is running, turn it off.
3. If coolant is leaking from under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until coolant stops leaking or steam stops coming out from under the hood. If there are no visible coolant leaks or steam, do not stop the engine and check that the cooling fan is working properly. If the fan does not work, stop the engine.
4. Check if the water pump drive belt is in place. If it is in place, check its tension. If the belt is OK, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses, or under the car (condensation from the air conditioner flows under the parked car if it is turned on).
Warning: When the engine is running, keep all moving parts away from (fan, drive belt) do not get hair, hands or clothing in the way, which could cause injury.
Warning (Diesel vehicles only): Do not perform any work on the fuel injection system while the engine is running or within 30 minutes of stopping the engine. The high-pressure fuel pump, fuel rail and high-pressure fuel lines are still under high pressure for some time after the engine has stopped. A high pressure fuel jet if the system is not sealed can cause serious injury. Persons using pacemakers should not be closer than 30 cm from the injection system control unit and wiring in the engine compartment while the engine is running, since high voltage currents in the common rail injection system generate a strong magnetic field.
5. If the water pump drive belt breaks or coolant leaks, stop the engine immediately and contact your nearest Hyundai dealer for assistance.
Warning: Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. This may cause coolant to be released from the radiator, causing serious burns.
6. If you are unable to determine the cause of overheating, wait until the engine cools down to normal temperature. Then, if there is a coolant leak, carefully open the radiator cap and add the following amount of coolant (see here) so that its level is between the marks on the expansion tank.
7. Proceed with caution, watching for further signs of overheating. If the engine overheats again, contact your Hyundai dealer for assistance.
Caution: A rapid decrease in the coolant level indicates a leak in the cooling system, which should be repaired as soon as possible by a Hyundai dealer.
