1 – steering rod; 2 – steel clamp; 3 – protective cover; 4 – nut, 16–34 N·m; 5 – steering rod end; 6 – clamp.
Removal
Remove the steering gear, pinion and tie rods from the vehicle as an assembly.
Disassembly
1. Secure the steering gear in a vice with jaws covered with soft material.
Warning: When securing the steering gear in a vice, wrap the steering gear in a cloth and be careful not to damage it when the vice is tightened.

2. Loosen the clamp and remove the protective boot from the steering gear.
3. Using a chisel, unscrew the left steering rod mounting nut.

Warning: If the rack and pinion must be removed, remove the left tie rod.
4. Move the rack all the way to the right and secure it in a vice with the jaws covered with soft material. Loosen the clamp and remove the left steering rod from the steering gear.

5. Remove the right tie rod by repeating steps 3 and 4.

Examination
1. Check the tie rods and tie rod ends for damage or deformation.
2. Check the protective covers for damage or distortion.
3. Check the torque required to turn the ball joint pin.
Torque required to rotate the ball joint journal: 2–5 Nm

4. Check the operation of the steering rod ball joint and axial play.
Assembly

1. After installing the steering rods, tighten the nuts securing them to the required torque and bend the flange of the nut into the keyway.
Tightening torque: 80–100 Nm
2. Secure the steering rod protective boot with a metal clamp.
Warning! The protective cover mounting clamp must be installed after adjusting the front wheel alignment.
3. Measure the transmission stroke.
Total transmission travel: 134 mm

Warning! The full gear travel determines the maximum steering angle of the front wheels.

4. Adjust the length of the steering rod and tighten the lock nut.
- Steering rod length: 185.2 mm
- Tightening torque: 50–55 Nm
Installation
Install the steering gear and steering rods as an assembly.
