Order of execution
1. Start the engine with the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. With the front wheels set to drive in a straight line, measure the force required on the steering wheel to turn the wheels left and right.
Force: 5 N
2. Set the front wheels to straight ahead, gently turn the steering wheel left and right until you feel resistance, and measure the steering play. Backlash is measured by the outer diameter of the steering wheel.
Steering wheel play: 0–30 mm
3. If the play exceeds the allowable value, then the cruciform universal joints of the steering shaft or steering gear are worn out.
