Checking the steering wheel play (Hyundai Santa Fe CM)

Set the front wheels to the straight-ahead position (steering wheel to the center position), start the engine and apply a force of 5 N to the steering wheel rim (turn the steering wheel slightly).

Measure the free play (backlash) of the steering wheel along its rim (Fig. 5.1).

Nominal value of free play (backlash) of the steering wheel: 0–30 mm.

If the steering wheel play exceeds the maximum permissible value, check for clearances in the steering shaft connections and tie rod ends.
