1.6L engines produced in 1992: This engine is the base engine in the family of 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines installed in the car.
Engines 1.6 li 1.8 l since 1993: These engines are a modification of the 1.6 l engine produced in 1992. The main difference between the 1.6 l and 1.8 l engines is that the blocks of these engines are additionally equipped with two balance shafts driven by the crankshaft. Otherwise, the design of these engines, and therefore the procedure for maintenance and repair, are identical. During production, these engines were modernized several times.
2.0 L engines since 2000: The 2.0 L engine is structurally different from the 1.6 L and 1.8 L engines. The characteristic features of the two-liter engine are:
- the presence of a toothed belt drive for only one camshaft, not two (1.6L and 1.8L engines);
- the presence of a chain drive of the second camshaft from the first;
- absence of balance shafts,
- modified design of oil pump (the oil pump gears have internal engagement, as opposed to the external engagement of the 1.6L and 1.8L engines).
All engines are installed transversely to the vehicle's axis of motion.
Each engine is a four-cylinder unit with two overhead camshafts driven by a toothed belt. The crankshaft rotates in five replaceable main bearings, with the central bearing (thrust) performing the additional function of controlling the axial play of the crankshaft.
The pistons are equipped with two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
The engine is cooled by a liquid cooling system. A belt driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant around the cylinders and combustion chambers and through the intake manifold.
The engine is lubricated by an oil pump mounted on the front of the engine. It is driven by the crankshaft. The oil is constantly filtered by a filter.
