1992 1.6L Engines: This engine is the base engine in the family of 1.6 and 1.8 liter vehicle-mounted engines.
1.6 or 1.8L engines from 1993: These engines are a modification of the 1.6L engine from 1992. The main difference between the 1.6 liter and 1.8 liter engines is that two crankshaft-driven balance shafts are additionally installed in the blocks of these engines. Otherwise, the designs of these engines, and, consequently, the procedure for maintenance and repair are identical. During production, these engines were upgraded several times.
2.0L engines since 2000: The 2.0L engine is structurally different from the 1.6L and 1.8L engines. The characteristic features of the two-liter engine are:
- the presence of a toothed belt drive only one camshaft, not two (engines 1.6 l and 1.8 l);
- the presence of a chain drive of the second camshaft from the first;
- no balance shafts
- modified oil pump design (oil pump gears are internally geared as opposed to externally geared on the 1.6L and 1.8L engines).
All engines are installed across the vehicle's axis of motion.
Each engine is a four-cylinder unit topped by two toothed belt-driven camshafts. The crankshaft rotates in five replaceable main bearings, with the central bearing (persistent) performs an additional function of controlling the axial play of the crankshaft.
The pistons are equipped with two compression rings and one oil scraper.
The engine is cooled by a liquid cooling system. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant around the cylinders and combustion chambers and through the intake manifold.
Engine lubrication is provided by an oil pump mounted on the front of the engine. It is driven by the crankshaft. The oil is constantly filtered by a filter.
