Driver airbag
Your Hyundai vehicle is equipped with an additional restraint system (airbags). The presence of this system is determined by the inscription «SRS AIR BAG», embossed on the steering wheel hub trim and on the passenger side instrument panel above the glove box.
The Hyundai SRS system includes airbags located under the covers in the steering wheel hub and on the dashboard on the passenger side above the glove box. The SRS system, in the event of a sufficiently severe frontal impact, provides protection for the driver and / or front passenger, supplementing the action of the seat belts.
Note: Be sure to read the SRS information on the labels located on the back of the sun visor and inside the glove box.
Warning:
- As its name suggests, the SRS is designed to work in conjunction with, but does not replace, the driver's and passenger's three-point seat belts. Therefore, in all cases, while driving, you must fasten your seat belts. In addition, the airbags only deploy under certain conditions during a large frontal impact that could cause serious injury to occupants.
- The SRS airbags are designed to inflate only in frontal impacts of sufficient force, directed at an angle of less than 30°relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, but will not inflate in side impacts, rear impacts and vehicle rollovers. In addition, airbags are disposable. Therefore, you should always wear seat belts.
- The front airbags will not deploy in the event of a side impact, rear impact, or vehicle rollover. In addition, they will not trigger in a frontal impact below a certain trigger threshold.
- The driver must adjust the seat to be as far away from the steering wheel as possible to maintain control of the vehicle. Landing too close to the steering wheel can cause death or serious injury if the airbag deploys.
- There must be no objects on the airbag modules in the steering wheel and in the instrument panel on the passenger side above or near the glove compartment, as any such item presents a hazard if the airbags deploy in a severe impact.
- Deployed airbags are replaced by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
- Do not carry out any work on the system wiring and other elements of the SRS system and do not disconnect them. Doing so may result in injury if the airbags are accidentally deployed or may become inoperative.
- Do not install a child restraint system in the front passenger seat. The child restraint system must never be in the front seat. An infant or young child can be seriously injured or killed by an airbag deployment in a crash.
- Do not carry children in the front passenger seat. In the event of a child landing (adolescence or older) into the front seat, always make sure that the seat belt is properly fastened and move the seat to the rearmost position.
- For maximum protection in all types of crashes, everyone in the vehicle, including the driver, should always wear their seat belts, whether or not they have airbags in their seats, to minimize the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Do not sit too close to the airbag or lean on it unnecessarily while the vehicle is in motion.
- To provide protection in an accident, the SRS airbags inflate very quickly. If an unbelted driver and passenger are in the wrong position in relation to the airbag, the airbag can cause a strong blow to the driver, causing serious or fatal injury when deployed.
Elements and functions of the SRS system
The SRS system includes the following elements:
- Driver Airbag Module
- Passenger Airbag Module
- SRS warning lamp
- SRS electronic control unit
When the ignition is on, the electronic control unit constantly analyzes the state of all elements of the system and, in the event of a frontal or close to frontal impact of sufficient force, issues a command to inflate the airbags.
The SRS warning light in the instrument cluster flashes for 6 seconds after the ignition key is turned to «On» or after starting the engine, then it should go out.
The airbag modules are located in the steering wheel hub and in the dashboard on the passenger side above the glove box.
As soon as the SRS ECU detects a significant frontal impact, it issues a command to deploy the airbags.
When the airbag is deployed, the seams of the module facing are torn under the action of pressure in the pillow, parts of the lining open and the airbag is filled to its full volume.
In the event of an impact, a fully inflated airbag, together with a properly fastened seat belt, slows the movement of the body of the driver and passenger forward, thereby reducing the risk of head and chest injuries.
Once fully inflated, the airbag immediately begins to deflate, providing the driver with forward visibility.
Passenger airbag
Attention: If there is a bottle of liquid air freshener in the car, do not place it near the instrument cluster or on the dashboard. Possible leakage of liquid freshener from the container and its contact with the indicated parts (instrument cluster, instrument panel or cabin ventilation nozzle) may cause damage to them. If liquid air freshener comes into contact with these areas, wash it off immediately with water.
Passenger airbag
Warning:
- When the airbag deploys, a loud bang is heard and fine dust appears in the cabin. This is normal and does not pose a danger. However, the dust generated when the airbag is deployed can cause skin irritation. Wash your hands and face thoroughly with warm water and neutral soap after deploying airbags in an accident.
- The airbags will only deploy when the ignition key is in the «ON» («Ignition»). If the airbag warning light after turning the ignition key to the «ON» does not light up or lights up constantly or when the ignition key is turned to the «ON» or after starting the engine, it stays on, flashing for about 6 seconds, or lights up while the vehicle is moving, have the SRS system checked by an authorized Hyundai dealer immediately.
- Before replacing a blown fuse or disconnecting the battery, turn the ignition key to the «LOCK» («blocking») or remove the key from the lock. Do not remove or replace the fuse or fuses for the airbag circuits in the «ON» ignition key in the lock. Failure to do so will cause the SRS warning light to illuminate.
