The seat belt pretensioners can deploy separately from the airbags or at the same time.
They block the seat belts when the car comes to a sudden stop or the body leans forward sharply. The difference is that in some types of frontal collision, the pretensioners are activated and pre-tension the seat belts.
The seat belt pretensioner system consists of the following main parts, the location of which is shown in the figure:
- 1. SRS airbag warning light
- 2. Seat belt pretensioner
- 3. Electronic control unit of the SRS system
Warning: The maximum effectiveness of the seat belt pretensioner is obtained when:
- 1. Proper fastening of the seat belt.
- 2. The correct position of the seat belt on the body.
Notes:
- The seatbelt and passenger pretensioners are triggered in some frontal collisions. The pretensioners can deploy at the same time as the airbags. At the same time, they work even if the belts are not fastened at the time of the impact.
- When the pretensioners are activated, a loud bang is heard and fine smoke-like dust appears in the cabin, which is normal and does not pose a danger.
- Although this dust is harmless, it can cause skin irritation. In addition, this dust should not be inhaled for a long time. Wash your hands and face thoroughly after an accident that deploys the pretensioners.
Attention:
- Since the crash sensor that triggers the airbags is also linked to the pretensioners, the airbag warning light () lights up in the instrument cluster for about 6 seconds after the ignition key is turned to «ON» («Ignition»), then turns off.
- In the event of a fault in the pretensioner circuit, the warning lamp in the instrument cluster comes on even if there is no fault in the airbag system. If the SRS airbag warning light does not come on or stays on after the ignition key is turned to «ON» («Ignition»), or after lighting does not go out within 6 seconds or lights up while driving, you should have the pretensioners of the seat belts or airbags of the SRS system checked by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.
Warning:
- Pretensioners are disposable devices. After they have been deployed, the seat belts must be replaced. Seat belts of any type that were fastened at the time of the accident must also be replaced.
- When activated, the pretensioner mechanism heats up. Do not touch them for several minutes after they have been triggered.
- Do not attempt to check or replace pretensioners yourself. Such operations should only be carried out by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
- Do not hit the pretensioners.
- Do not attempt any maintenance or repairs on the pretensioners yourself.
- Mishandling or failing to follow the instructions not to strike them, or unauthorized modification, replacement, maintenance, or repair of pretensioners, may cause them to malfunction or cause accidental operation, which may result in serious injury.
- While driving, the driver and all passengers must be sure to wear seat belts.
