Note: The figure shows the starter for a 1.6L engine. For models with 1.4L engines, the starter design may differ slightly.
Disassembly
1. Unscrew the nut and disconnect the wire (1) from the "M" terminal of the traction relay (2).
2. Unscrew 2 screws (3) and remove the traction relay (4).
3. Remove the two brush holder screws (5) and two through bolts (6).
4. Remove the back cover (7) and brush holder (8).
5. Remove the housing with the excitation winding (9) and the armature (10).
6. Remove the fork plate (11) and seal (12).
7. Remove the fork (13) from the gear (14).
8. Using the mandrel (15), remove the thrust ring (16).
9. Using pliers (17), remove the retaining ring (18).
10. Remove the thrust ring (19), retaining ring (20), drive gear (21) from the shaft (22).
Assembly
11. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
Note on installing the thrust ring:
After installing the drive gear, use a suitable puller (23) to pull the thrust ring (24) over the retaining ring (25).
