Checking the force on the steering wheel rim of a stationary vehicle (Hyundai Elantra J2)

1. Place the vehicle on a level surface, the steering wheel should be set to the position corresponding to driving straight ahead.

2. Increase engine speed to 1000±100 rpm.

Warning. After checking, reduce the engine speed to the standard value (corresponding to engine operation at idle speed).


3. Turn the steering wheel clockwise and counterclockwise 1.5 turns and measure the turning force using a spring scale.

Steering wheel rim force of a stationary vehicle (standard value) — 33.3 N or less

4. If the force on the steering wheel rim of a stationary vehicle is excessively high, check:
  • 1) Check the dust covers of the lower arm ball joint and the steering rod end for damage or cracks.
  • 2) The amount of preload of the gear in the steering gear housing and the starting torque of the ball joint in the steering rod end.
  • 3) Starting torque of the lower arm ball joint.
