Checking the amount of effort required to turn the steering wheel on a stationary vehicle (Mitsubishi Matrix)

Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface and set the steering wheels in the straight-ahead position.

Increase engine speed to 900–1100 min⁻¹.

Note: After checking at the specified engine crankshaft speed, it is necessary to set the normal idle speed.

Using a spring dynamometer, measure the force required to turn the steering wheel from a straight-ahead position to the left and right (by 1.5 turns) (Fig. 5.5).

The nominal value of the steering wheel turning force is 29 N.

Check that there is no sudden change in the amount of turning force when turning the steering wheel.

If the measured turning force value exceeds the nominal value, check the lower control arm ball joint and tie rod end ball joint boots for cracks or damage.

Check the preload of the steering gear pinion bearing and the starting torque of the tie rod end ball joint.

Check the moment the ball joint starts to rotate.
