Note: On engines with a distributorless ignition system, it is not necessary to set the ignition timing.
To facilitate checking the ignition timing, it is recommended to apply markings on the crankshaft pulley and on the timing belt cover.
To check and set the ignition timing, a tachometer is required.
Warm up the engine to operating temperature and turn it off.
Turn off all electrical consumers.
Set the gearbox to neutral and apply the handbrake. With an automatic transmission, move the lever to position P.
Connect the tachometer and stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the vehicle has an ignition coil built into the ignition distributor and does not have a tachometer, the RPM signal can be read as shown in the figure.

Start the engine and let it idle.
Check the number of revolutions. Adjust the speed if it goes beyond 700-900 rpm.
Aim the strobe light at the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley.

The ignition timing is set correctly if, when illuminated by the strobe lamp, the mark on the crankshaft pulley is opposite the required mark on the timing belt cover.
If the ignition timing marks do not match, loosen the distributor clamp nut and adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor.

Tighten the ignition distributor with a torque of 10 Nm.
Disconnect the measuring instruments with the ignition off.
At service stations, the inertial and vacuum correction of the ignition timing at various engine speeds is additionally checked.
Early models:
- On vehicles with power steering, set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position.
- Connect the engine speed meter and stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Insert a paper clip into the diagnostic connector.

- Connect the engine speed meter.

Note: On some engines the reading must be multiplied by 2 to obtain the true engine RPM value.
- Check the number of revolutions. It should be within 850+100 rpm. Otherwise, check the idle speed controller.
- Turn off the ignition.
- Remove the plug from the ignition timing terminal, connect the terminal to ground via an auxiliary wire.
- Turn on the engine, leaving it to idle.
- Check the ignition timing,
- If the ignition timing is outside the tolerance, slightly loosen the crankshaft position sensor mounting nut. Set the ignition timing by turning the sensor.

- Tighten the mounting nut.
- Turn off the ignition and remove the auxiliary wire. Place the plug on the ignition timing connector.
