Brake pads on rear drum brakes
1 – rack support brake pads; 2 - brake shield; 3 – working brake cylinder; 4 - lever latch; 5 - expanding bar; 6 – parking brake lever; 7 - upper return spring; 8 - rear brake shoe; 9 - spring; 10 - clamp; 11 – brake drum; 12 - lower return spring; 13 - regulator spring; 14 - front brake shoe.
Withdrawal
1. Remove the wheel and brake drum.
2. Remove the brake shoe support clip, auto adjuster spring, and adjuster lever.
3. Squeeze the pads and remove the pad adjuster.
4. Remove brake shoes together with return springs.
Examination
1. Measure the inside diameter of the brake drum. Use a dial indicator to check the runout of the brake drum. Replace the brake drum if the inner diameter of the drum exceeds the limit.
- Max Diameter: 200mm
- Brake drum runout: 0.015mm
2. Measure the thickness of the rear brake pads. Replace all brake pads on one axle of the vehicle, even if only one pad is under the thickness limit.
Minimum allowable thickness: 1.0 mm
3. Check the brake pads for oil or grease contamination, wear and cracks.
4. Inspect the working brake cylinders for brake fluid leaks.
5. Inspect the brake shield for wear or damage.
6. Check up uniformity of a prileganiye of a brake pad to a brake drum.
Installation
1. Lubricate the following brake pad contact points with grease:
- a. points of contact of brake pads with the brake shield;
- b. contact points of the brake pads with the base plate.
Recommended lubricant: SAE J310, NLGI #2
2. Install the brake shoe support strut.
3. Install the return springs on the brake pads.
4. After installing the brake drum, tighten the parking brake lever several times.
