Rear drum brakes (Hyundai Elantra J1)

0
The rear wheels of the car are equipped with drum brakes, which automatically maintain the gap between the pads and the drum. Two semicircular brake shoes are pressed against a cylindrical brake drum by a wheel brake cylinder mounted at the top. This design with one wheel cylinder for two shoes is called simplex brakes. The drum brake is "self-amplifying", that is, the brake shoe, due to the rotation of the wheel, is pressed to a certain extent against the drum. This means that little pedal force is required. When moving forward, the front shoe works with force. It is called the active or primary brake shoe, the rear one is called the passive or secondary brake shoe.

With this brake design, the brake clearance is automatically adjusted after the brake pedal is released.
