Before installing the engine on the stand, the gearbox must be removed from it.
If you don't have a stand, you can disassemble the engine by securing it to the floor or a foot. Be extremely careful not to drop the engine when working on it without a stand.
If you intend to purchase a rebuilt engine, you will first need to remove all external components so that you can transfer them to the engine you purchase, just as you would if they were to be installed on an engine you decided to rebuild yourself.
Caution: When removing external components from the engine, pay close attention to any parts that may be useful during installation. Mark the position of all gaskets, seals, bushings, studs, brackets, washers, bolts and other small parts.
If you are planning a complete overhaul, the engine must be disassembled and the internal components removed in the following order:
- all hoses, wires, fuel lines, sensors and thermostat;
- receiver and fuel injection system components;
- ignition distributor (if any);
- ignition coil;
- alternator belt and the alternator itself;

- generator drive pulley;
- front Timing Belt Covers;
- tensioner/roller;
- idler pulley;
- toothed belt;
- camshaft and crankshaft gears;
- rear timing belt cover;
- coolant pump;
- intake and exhaust manifolds;
- cylinder head upper cover;
- cylinder head (assembled);
- oil pan, oil receiver;
- oil pump;
- connecting rod caps;
- pistons with connecting rods;
- flywheel;
- crankshaft rear oil seal housing;
- crankshaft main bearing caps;
- crankshaft;
- inserts/thrust half rings.
Before you begin disassembling, make sure you have the following tools and equipment ready to go. Also refer to the engine disassembly/assembly sequence for a list of the tools, equipment and materials needed.
- A standard set of tools.
- Small cardboard boxes or plastic bags for storing parts.
- Tool for removing old gaskets.
- Measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers).
- Set of indicators.
- Valve spring puller.
- Valve grinding tool.
- Tool for cleaning piston ring grooves.
- Electric drill.
- Set of hairpins.
- Wire brushes.
- Special brushes for cleaning oil lines.
