Checking engine oil level/changing oil (Hyundai Elantra J1)

The engine oil level should be checked approximately every 600 km, but at least once a week. The car must be placed on a level surface and the engine must be warm.

To check, pull out the dipstick (oil level indicator) and wipe it with a clean cloth.

Insert the dipstick again and pull it out again. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks.

If the oil level is at the lower mark, you need to add oil. The volume of oil between both marks is approximately 1 liter, so you can conclude from this how much oil is missing.

Never overfill the engine with oil, i.e. its level should not rise above the upper mark.

Every 10 thousand km or at least once a year, you need to change the engine oil and oil filter. The oil change interval should be reduced if the vehicle is frequently driven with a trailer or in very dusty conditions, or if the vehicle is driven continuously over short distances (for example, commutes to work less than 7-8 km), at air temperatures below zero or with frequent stops in traffic jams, when the engine must idle for a long time.

Raise the car from the front (if necessary) and unscrew the threaded plug of the oil drain hole on the bottom of the oil pan.

To speed up the oil draining, remove either the oil filler cap or the oil level indicator. The oil should be warm, but not hot

After draining the oil, clean the drain plug and screw it back into place.

Oil filter - replacement

To replace the filter element, it is recommended to use a special key. You can buy such a key in many stores, at the market, or make it yourself.

If you do not have a wrench and the filter needs to be replaced, you can insert a screwdriver or punch into the filter and unscrew the filter.

After unscrewing the filter, thoroughly clean the seat on the cylinder block and lubricate the filter gasket with engine oil. Screw the new filter on until the sealing ring is compressed and tighten it from this position 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn by hand without applying any additional force.
