Traction relay connection diagram
If the traction rep is defective, the starter gear does not engage the flywheel ring gear, and the starter does not turn the engine.
Examination
Remove the starter.
Disconnect the excitation winding wire from terminal (30).
Connect the cigarette lighter cables to the battery for a few seconds as shown in the figure below. The starter gear should move forward.
Remove the ground wire from terminal "C". The starter gear should remain in the extended position. If not, replace the traction relay.
Removal
Unscrew the two mounting bolts, remove the starting relay wire terminal from the drive housing, and disconnect the relay. Remove the spacer washers.
Installation
Install the starting relay in the reverse order of removal.
Check the relay as described above.
Install the starter.
