Due to differences in legislation between regions, requirements for towing trailers, cars or other vehicles and devices may also change. For more information on towing, contact your Hyundai dealer.
Attention: For proper break-in of the vehicle's power unit, do not use it for towing during the first 2000 km of driving. Failure to do so may result in severe engine or transmission damage.
Trailer couplings
Choose the right type of hook and hitch ball head so that the installation location matches the type of trailer or vehicle being towed.
Use a non-levelling hitch that distributes load evenly to the chassis.
The hitch must be securely attached to the vehicle and installed by a qualified mechanic. DO NOT USE HITCHES INTENDED FOR TEMPORARY INSTALLATION. NEVER USE A HITCH ATTACHING TO THE BUMPER ONLY.
Trailer brake system
If your trailer is equipped with a brake system, make sure it complies with national or local regulations and is properly installed and in working order.
Note: Due to the increased loads when towing a trailer, more frequent vehicle maintenance is required.
Attention:
- It is forbidden to connect the trailer brake system directly to the vehicle brake system.
- To prevent the engine from overheating when driving with a towed trailer on steep inclines (over 12%), closely monitor the coolant temperature gauge. If the pointer arrow moves towards the zone «H» (Hot), stop the vehicle in a safe place and let the engine idle until it has cooled down. After sufficient cooling of the engine, you can continue driving.
Safety chains
In the event of a hitch failure, the towed trailer or vehicle will move uncontrollably, shift into other or oncoming lanes, and collide with another vehicle. To prevent such a danger, in most regions it is mandatory to use safety chains connecting the towing vehicle to the trailer.
Permissible trailer weight
The vertical load on the hitch can be increased or decreased by redistributing the load in the trailer. This can be verified by determining the gross weight of the trailer with a load, and then the load on the hitch.
Note:
- 1. Do not load the rear of the trailer more than the front. About 60% of the weight of the load should be placed in the front half of the loaded trailer, and 40% in the rear half.
- 2. Gross vehicle weight with trailer must not exceed the gross transport weight specified in rating plate car. Gross transport weight includes the weight of the vehicle, driver, all passengers and luggage, cargo, vehicle and trailer couplings and any additional equipment.
- 3. The load on the front or rear axle must not exceed the maximum axle load indicated on the identification plate car. It is possible that the weight of the trailer you are towing does not exceed the gross vehicle weight (GVWR), but exceeds the maximum axle load (GAWR). Incorrect trailer loading and/or too much luggage in the trunk of the vehicle can lead to rear axle overload. Redistribute the load and check the axle load again.
- 4. The maximum allowable static vertical hitch load is:
- - 4-door models 65 kg
- - 5 door models 60 kg
- 5. The maximum allowable overhang of the hitch attachment points is 1095 mm.
Attention: When towing a trailer, it is recommended to observe the following technical requirements. The weight of the trailer must not exceed the values given in the table below.
Warning: Improper loading of your vehicle and trailer can seriously affect the operation of your steering and braking systems, which could lead to an accident (accidents) in which you could be seriously injured.
Tips for towing a trailer or car
1. Before towing, check the hitch and the attachment of the safety chains, as well as the serviceability of the position light, brake light and direction indicators of the trailer.
2. Always maintain a moderate speed (no more than 100 km/h).
3. When towing, fuel consumption is higher than usual.
4. To ensure effective engine braking and sufficient alternator charging current, do not engage fifth gear (in a car with a manual transmission) or overdrive (by car with automatic transmission).
5. Always securely secure the load in the trailer to prevent it from shifting while driving.
6. Check the condition of the vehicle and trailer tires and their pressure. Insufficient tire pressure significantly impairs handling. Also check the spare tire.
7. The vehicle-trailer coupling is more susceptible to crosswinds, gusts of wind and shock waves from oncoming traffic.
Maintain a constant speed and straightness when passing large oncoming vehicles. Reduce speed if wind gusts are too strong.
8. When parking a vehicle with a trailer, especially on a slope, take the usual precautions. Turn the front wheels toward or away from the curb, apply the parking brake firmly, and engage 1st or reverse gear (in a car with a manual transmission) or set the selector lever to position «R» (by car with automatic transmission). Also, chock each trailer wheel.
9. If the trailer is equipped with electric brakes, test them for proper operation by driving the trailer and manually engaging the trailer brake controller. At the same time, the reliability of the electrical wiring connections is checked at the same time.
10. While driving, check from time to time that the load is secured and that the trailer lights and brakes are working properly.
11. Avoid sudden starting, sudden acceleration and braking.
12. Avoid sharp turns and lane changes.
13. Do not press too long or too often on the brake pedal. This will cause the brakes to overheat and reduce their effectiveness.
14. When driving downhill, use engine braking by shifting into a low gear.
On long uphill grades, shift into low gear and slow down to avoid overloading and/or overheating the engine.
15. When stopping on a hill, do not use the accelerator pedal to stop the vehicle from rolling. This will cause the automatic transmission to overheat. Set the parking brake or depress the brake pedal.
Note: When towing, check the oil level in the gearbox housing frequently.
Caution: If the engine overheats while towing (the temperature gauge needle is near the red zone) it can be reduced or eliminated by taking the following measures:
- 1. Turn off the air conditioner.
- 2. Reduce your driving speed.
- 3. Downhill, downshift.
- 4. In a traffic jam, move the selector lever to the position «R» or place it in neutral and let the engine run at high idle.
