Measuring the thickness of the front disc brake pads (Hyundai Elantra J1)

The front disc brakes use so-called floating caliper brake mechanisms. The brake caliper looks like a clenched fist. The brake pistons in the cylinder body press the inner pad against the brake disc, causing the cylinder body to tighten in its guide, and the pad on the other side is also pressed against the disc.



Despite the possibility of monitoring the thickness of the brake pads using a wear indicator (some models), one should not forget about additional visual control, which should be carried out more or less regularly and not only before a long trip.

The minimum thickness of the working layer of the pad is 2.0 mm.

For a quick check, with the wheel cap removed, shine a lamp and assess the thickness of the lining. More accurate control is achieved with the wheels removed.

Check the wear of the linings with a ruler.
