Checking the transmission oil level in the gearbox

Note: Checking the transmission oil level is not usually required during routine maintenance. Check the oil level if a leak is detected (after repairs are completed).

Caution: Do not allow foreign material or contamination to enter the gearbox.

1. Place the vehicle on a flat, horizontal surface.

2. Unscrew the eye bolt (A).

Note: Tightening torque: 39.2 - 44.1 Nm.

Replace the bolt gasket with a new one.

Replace the bolt gasket with a new one.

3. Fill with approximately 770 cm³ (A6LF2) or 700 cm³ (A6MF1) of ATF SP-IV transmission oil.

4. Start the engine and warm up the transmission oil in the gearbox to normal operating temperature (50 - 60°C).

5. Move the gear selector to all positions in turn. This will fill the torque converter and the entire hydraulic system with transmission oil. Set the gear selector to the "N" (Neutral) or "P" (Park) position.

6. Raise the car.

7. Unscrew the plug (A) on the valve body and check the oil level with your finger.

Note: Tightening torque: 34.3 - 44.1 Nm.

Replace the plug gasket with a new one.

Attention.

Low transmission fluid levels in the gearbox can cause malfunctions because the oil pump can trap air bubbles, causing the pressure in the system to drop. This will cause delays in gear shifting, slipping clutches and brakes.

Too much transmission fluid in the gearbox can cause it to foam. This can result in interruptions in operation, the same as with a low level. Air bubbles can cause the oil to overheat and oxidize, which can lead to failure of valves, clutches and brakes. Also, if the level is exceeded, transmission oil can be squeezed out through the breather and sealing cuffs.

Note: If the transmission oil smells burnt, it is contaminated with particles from the sealing cuffs, bushings and friction materials. The automatic transmission needs to be repaired.

Note: If the transmission oil smells…

8. Lower the vehicle and tighten the eye bolt.

Transmission oil change

1. Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain the automatic transmission fluid.

1. Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain…

2. Install the drain plug (A) with a new gasket.

Note: Tightening torque: 34.3 - 44.1 Nm.

3. Fill with approximately 5 liters of fresh automatic transmission oil.

4. Check the transmission oil level in the gearbox.
