Purpose of engine oil
Engine oil is used to lubricate and cool moving engine parts.
Oil consumption
During normal engine operation, oil consumption occurs. The reasons for the oil consumption of a serviceable engine are as follows:
- The oil is used to lubricate pistons, piston rings and cylinders.
- When the piston moves down, a thin film of oil remains on the cylinder walls. A certain amount of oil enters the combustion chambers under the influence of a strong depression in the cylinders during engine operation.
- This oil and the oil on the cylinder walls are burned by the high combustion temperature of the working mixture.
- Engine oil consumption largely depends on the viscosity and quality of the oil, engine speed, driving conditions, etc. Oil consumption increases in severe operating conditions, including at high speeds, frequent acceleration and deceleration.
