Purpose of motor oil
Motor oil serves to lubricate and cool the rubbing parts of the engine.
Oil consumption
During normal engine operation, oil consumption occurs. The reasons for oil consumption in a serviceable engine are as follows:
- The oil is used to lubricate pistons, piston rings and cylinders.
- As the piston moves downwards, a thin film of oil remains on the cylinder walls. Some amount of oil enters the combustion chambers under the influence of strong vacuum in the cylinders during engine operation.
- This oil and the oil on the cylinder walls burn under the influence of the high combustion temperature of the working mixture.
- Engine oil consumption largely depends on the viscosity and quality of the oil, engine speed, driving conditions, etc. Oil consumption increases under severe operating conditions, including high speeds, frequent acceleration and braking.
