There are three sources of environmental pollution in a car: crankcase gases, exhaust gases and gasoline fumes, represented by incompletely burned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Equipment used to limit the content of these harmful substances is called emission control equipment.

In recent model vehicles, many engine functions are increasingly controlled by an electronic control unit, eliminating the need for the many vacuum hoses and linkages found around the engines of earlier model vehicles.

Systems equipped with an environmental control device (ECM)

  • Fuel evaporation reduction system.
  • Fuel cut-off system during braking.
  • Ignition timing control systems.
  • Cold mix heating system.

Systems not equipped with an environmental control device (ECM)

  • Positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV).
  • Throttle positioning device.
  • Exhaust gas recirculation system.
  • Air suction system.
  • Altitude compensation system.
  • Automatic hot air intake system.
  • Automatic air damper.
  • Air damper shut-off device.
  • Air damper opening device.
