Checking the condition and level of working fluid in the automatic transmission (Hyundai Sonata EF)

0
1. Drive the car until the working fluid (ATF) in the gearbox reaches normal operating temperature (70-80°C).

2. Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface. Apply the parking brake.

3. With the engine idling, press the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding it in each of them for a few seconds) to fill the entire automatic transmission control hydraulic system and the automatic transmission torque converter with working fluid (ATF), and then set the selector lever to the "N" position.

4. Leave the engine idling (selector in position "N"). Open the hood of the car.

Caution: Be careful not to touch hot or moving parts of the vehicle.

5. Before removing the automatic transmission fluid level dipstick, clean the area around the dipstick from dirt with a clean, lint-free cloth. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

Attention: it is necessary to perform a major overhaul of the gearbox under the following conditions:
  • If the working fluid (ATF) in the automatic transmission has a burnt smell.
  • If the working fluid (ATF) in the automatic transmission is noticeably black.
  • If the working fluid (ATF) in the automatic transmission is contaminated with a large number of metal particles.

6. The normal level of the working fluid in the automatic transmission (ATF) should be in the "HOT" range of the automatic transmission working fluid level dipstick. If the level is below the specified level, then add the working fluid for the automatic transmission to the normal level.

Attention: if the level of the working fluid in the automatic transmission is above the "HOT" range, replace the working fluid.

  • Recommended working fluid SKATF SP-III, or DIAMOND A TF SP-III

7. Make sure you have carefully examined the condition of the automatic transmission fluid using the automatic transmission fluid level dipstick. Insert the dipstick into the standard hole and make sure the dipstick cover is tightly seated.

8. The working fluid in the automatic transmission and the filter must be replaced with new ones if a troubleshooting of the automatic transmission was carried out, a major overhaul of the automatic transmission was carried out, or the working fluid is heavily contaminated and does not meet technical requirements (operation in difficult conditions).

Note: special filters are used for automatic transmissions.
