Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface.
Press the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding it in each of them for a few seconds) to fill the entire automatic transmission control hydraulic system and the automatic transmission torque converter with oil (ATF), and then set the selector lever to the "N" position.
Before removing the dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the oil in the gearbox (ATF). In the following conditions, it is necessary to perform a major overhaul of the gearbox:
- oil (ATF) in automatic transmission has a burnt smell;
- the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission is noticeably black;
- the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission is contaminated with a large number of metal particles.
Check that the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is in the "HOT" range of the dipstick. If the oil level (ATF) is lower than specified, add it to the "HOT" mark.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF): GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M.
If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is below normal, the oil pump will suck in oil along with air, which will cause various malfunctions. Air that gets into the automatic transmission hydraulic system along with the oil (ATF) forms bubbles, which cause the oil to foam. As a result, the pressure in the hydraulic system will become unstable, which in turn will cause a delay in gear shifting (late gear engagement) and slippage of friction clutches or brakes, etc. If the level is above normal, then due to the rotation of the planetary gears, abundant foaming of the oil (ATF) will occur, which will eventually lead to the same consequences as with a low oil level (ATF), and will cause premature deterioration of the oil condition.
In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oxidation of oil (ATF) and varnish deposits, which damage valves, clutches and actuators. Foaming also causes oil (ATF) to be ejected through the crankcase breather, which is mistaken for leaks.

Make sure you carefully examine the condition of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) on the dipstick before installing it in place (Fig. 3.72).
