Timing Belt — Removal and Inspection

Removal and checking the belt

1. To remove the engine mounting bracket, support the oil pan on a wooden block and lift until it is completely separated.

2. Remove the power steering oil pump together with the return hoses.

3. Remove the engine mounting bracket in the sequence shown in the figure.

Slowly unscrew the bolt with the extension.

Note: Be aware that the flare bolt sometimes gets stuck in the bracket when heated.

4. Remove the pulley from the crankshaft, as well as the upper and lower timing belt covers.

5. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and turn the tensioner within the oblong hole in the direction opposite to the arrow.

6. If the toothed belt has already been used, mark the direction of its movement with an arrow before removing it.

Installing the tensioner and belt

Timing belt tensioner and its spring

Timing belt tensioner and its spring

1. Install the timing belt tensioner.

2. Secure the upper end of the tensioner spring to the engine coolant pump pin.

Fasten the hook in the direction shown in the picture.

3. Turn the timing belt tensioner along the oblong slot in a counterclockwise direction until it stops. Secure the timing belt tensioner.

Toothed belt

Toothed belt

1. Align the timing marks of the camshaft toothed pulleys (front and rear) and the crankshaft toothed pulley. (When the piston of the first cylinder passes the top dead center of the compression stroke).

2. Install the timing belt onto the crankshaft pulley and then onto the rear camshaft pulley.

3. Place the timing belt on the coolant pump pulley, on the timing belt pulley to the front camshaft and on the timing belt tensioner.

4. Apply force to the rear camshaft sprocket in a counterclockwise direction, tensioning the working section of the belt and check that all timing marks are aligned.

5. Install the flange.

6. Loosen the mounting bolts temporarily holding the tensioner by one or two turns and tension the timing belt using the tensioner spring force.

7. Using a special tool (09231—33100), turn the crankshaft two revolutions in the direction of its normal rotation.

Note: Turn smoothly and clockwise only.

8. Re-adjust the timing marks on the toothed pulleys and tighten the tensioner mounting bolts.

9. Check the belt tension with a belt tension gauge as shown in the figure.
  • Tension force - 260-380 N (new)

Warning: Place the hooks of the device between the teeth of the belt, and the rod should act on its back side.

10. Since the timing belt cover mounting bolts vary in size depending on their location, install these bolts as shown in the illustration.

Thread diameter x length:
  • A - 6 x 60 mm
  • B - 6 x 20 mm

11. Using special tools (09231—33200, 09231—33300), install the pulley on the crankshaft.
  • Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt - 150-160 Nm.

Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt - 150-160 Nm.
Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt - 150-160 Nm.

Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt - 150-160 Nm.

12. Since the engine mount bracket bolts have different sizes, install them taking into account the dimensions 10 x 53 mm, 12 x 56 mm, 10 x 40 mm.

Note: When installing the bolt, tighten it firmly while applying oil.

To facilitate installation work, raise the engine as much as necessary.
