Remove the engine side mount bracket (pic. 2.9).
Remove the coolant pump pulley.
Pic. 2.10. Upper Timing Belt Cover
Remove the timing belt top cover (pic. 2.10).
Remove the spark plugs.
Bring the #1 cylinder piston to TDC on the compression stroke by turning the engine crankshaft clockwise.
Note. Never turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to align the marks, as this may cause the timing belt to be tensioned incorrectly.

Loosen the pivot bolt and tensioner pulley bracket adjusting bolt (pic. 2.11).
Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise so that the camshaft sprocket turns 2 teeth.
Note. Turning the camshaft to a position where its cams do not press on the rocker arms of the exhaust valves is necessary to create the correct belt tension.
Check that the timing belt is properly engaged with the sprockets (each tooth of the belt on the sprocket is located in the groove).
Pic. 2.12. Tightening the tensioner roller pivot bolt
Tighten the adjusting bolt first, then tighten the tensioner roller pivot bolt (pic. 2.12).
Check timing belt tension.
Install spark plugs.
Install the timing belt top cover.
Install the water pump pulley and engine side support bracket.
