Move the selector to position «R» («Parking») (Automatic transmission) or shift lever to neutral and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is running, turn it off.
If coolant is leaking from under the vehicle or steam is coming out from under the hood, turn off the engine. Do not open the hood until coolant stops flowing from under the vehicle or steam stops coming out from under the hood. If there are no visible signs of coolant or steam leaks, keep the engine running and check that the cooling system radiator fan is running. If it doesn't work, turn off the engine.
Check the presence of the water pump drive belt. If it is in place, check its tension. If the belt is OK, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, coolant hoses, or under the vehicle. (If the air conditioner was turned on, cold water drains out of the car after the car stops, this is normal).
If the drive belt or coolant pump is faulty or there is a coolant leak, stop the engine immediately.
If no cause for overheating is found, wait until the engine coolant temperature returns to normal. If there is a coolant leak, carefully remove the radiator cap and add coolant to the mid-mark in the expansion tank.
Attention! A severe drop in coolant level indicates a leak in the cooling system.
