1. Pull off the road and stop the car in a safe place.
2. Move the selector to the "P" ("Park") position (automatic transmission) or move the gearshift lever to the neutral position and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is running, turn it off.
3. If coolant is leaking from under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, turn off the engine. Do not open the hood until coolant stops leaking from under the vehicle or steam stops coming from under the hood. If there is no visible sign of coolant or steam leaking, leave the engine running and make sure the radiator fan is working. If it is not working, turn off the engine.
4. Check for the presence of the coolant pump drive belt. If it is in place, check its tension. If it seems to be OK, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, cooling system hoses, or from under the car. (If the air conditioner was on, cold water will drain from it after the car is stopped, this is normal).
Warning: When the engine is running, keep hands, long hair and clothing away from moving parts such as the radiator fan and drive belts to prevent injury.
Warning: (Diesel engines only) Do not tamper with the injection system while the engine is running or for 30 seconds after the engine has stopped. The high-pressure fuel pump, manifold, injectors and high-pressure fuel pipes contain fuel under pressure even after the engine has stopped. Fuel spurting from a leak can cause serious injury if it comes into contact with the skin. People using a pacemaker should not come closer than 30 cm to the electronic control unit or wiring in the engine compartment while the engine is running, since the high-voltage current in the common rail system generates a strong electromagnetic field.
5. If the drive belt or coolant pump is faulty, or there is a coolant leak, turn off the engine immediately and contact your nearest authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
Warning: Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Boiling coolant may be ejected and you may be burned.
6. If you cannot find the cause of overheating, wait until the engine coolant temperature returns to normal. If there is a coolant leak, carefully remove the radiator cap and add coolant to half the level of the liquid in the expansion tank.
7. Monitor closely for further signs of overheating. If engine overheating occurs again, contact your authorized Hyundai dealer for assistance.
Caution: If the coolant level drops significantly, there is a leak in the cooling system. In this case, contact an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible for inspection.
