If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, move the selector lever to position "P" or "N" and apply the parking brake.
Check the battery cable connections to ensure they are clean and tight.

Turn on the interior light. If the light glows dimly or goes out when the starter is turned on, the battery is discharged (Fig. 1.190).
Check the tightness of the starter wire connections.
Do not tow the engine.
If the engine turns normally with the starter, but does not start
Check the fuel level in the tank.
Check all ignition system wire connections, spark plugs and coil (for petrol vehicles), all glow plug wire connections, relay and glow plug (for diesel vehicles). Reconnect any loose or poorly connected connections.
Check the fuel line in the engine compartment.
If the engine stalls while driving
Reduce the speed of the car gradually, driving straight ahead. Carefully turn off the road to a safe place.
Turn on the hazard warning lights.
Try to start the engine again.
