Warning: To avoid serious injury when working with batteries, carefully observe the following precautions:
Battery electrolyte is a highly concentrated solution of sulfuric acid, which is extremely harmful and corrosive. Be careful not to let it come into contact with your eyes, skin, clothing, or painted surfaces of your vehicle. If you spill electrolyte on yourself, do the following immediately:
- If you spill electrolyte on your skin, rinse the affected areas with clean water for at least 15 minutes and then seek medical attention.
- If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them with water and seek medical attention immediately. Continue rinsing your eyes with a sponge soaked in water during transportation to the doctor.
- If you swallow an electrolyte, drink plenty of water or milk and take magnesium, eat a raw egg, or drink vegetable oil. Seek medical attention immediately.
When charging a battery from a charger or vehicle alternator, explosive gas is released. Observe the following precautions to prevent possible injury:
- Charge the battery only in a well-ventilated area.
- Do not allow open flames or smoking in this area.
- Charge the battery out of reach of children.
Checking the battery
Keep the battery clean. Any traces of corrosion around the battery terminals should be removed using a solution of baking soda and warm water. After the battery terminals are dry, lubricate them with a thin layer of grease.
