Starting a gasoline engine
Warning: Never run the engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area for longer than necessary to drive in or out. The carbon monoxide contained in the exhaust gases is odorless and can cause death!
Diesel engine start
Cold engine day
After turning the ignition key to position «ON» («On») wait until the preheat indicator goes off.
Turn on the starter until the engine starts.
For a warm engine
Turn on the starter. If the engine does not start on the first attempt, wait a few seconds and try again using the preheater.
For normal conditions
Engine start operations:
- 1. Insert the key into the ignition lock and fasten the seat belt.
- 2. Fully depress the clutch pedal and move the shift lever (Manual Transmission) to neutral or selector (Automatic transmission) into position «R» («Parking»),
- 3. After turning the ignition key to position «ON» («On,») make sure all warning lights and gauges are working properly before starting the engine.
- 4. If the car is equipped with a preheating system, after turning the ignition key, the yellow preheating indicator on the instrument panel will light up. After a while, it will turn off, indicating that the preheating is finished.
Note: If the engine does not start within 10 seconds of preheating, turn the ignition key back to "LOCK" ("blocking") for 10 seconds and then to position "ON" ("On") for reheating.
Warning: When starting a vehicle with a manual transmission, be sure to fully depress the clutch pedal. If it is not fully depressed, the vehicle may jerk forward or backward when starting the engine and be damaged.
- 5. Turn the ignition key to position "START ("Starter") and release after starting the engine.
Starting and stopping a diesel engine with a turbocharger
1. Do not start the engine at full power immediately. If the engine is cold, warm it up for a few seconds at idle before driving. This will ensure proper lubrication of the turbocharger system.
2. After driving at high speed or strenuous (requiring heavy loads on the engine) movement, do not turn off the engine immediately. Let it run at idle for 1 minute. This will allow the turbocharger to cool before stopping the engine.
Warning: Do not turn off the engine immediately after heavy loads, as this may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger system.
