Improper maintenance of the SRS can cause the airbag to deploy unintentionally, resulting in some degree of injury.
Mistakes made during unskilled maintenance can lead to a failure of the system at the right time with unpredictable consequences.
1. After turning the ignition key to the LOCK position and disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, wait at least 30 seconds before proceeding with further work.
The SRS system is designed in such a way that after the battery is disconnected, sufficient voltage is maintained for a short time to deploy the airbag.
2. After disconnecting the battery, the memory of some electronic devices (clock, radio, etc.) is erased. Before starting work, write down the basic settings of these devices and restore them after the repair is completed.
3. Malfunctions of the passive safety system practically do not manifest themselves in any way, therefore the main form of system diagnostics is to check for the presence of fault codes.
4. Always read trouble codes before disconnecting the battery.
5. Never install system parts from another car on a car. Install only new parts.
6. Never disassemble airbag units and clock spring. If the system wiring is faulty, replace the entire wiring harness.
7. If by any chance a system component has been dropped from a more or less decent height, or there are cracks or deformation of the case, replace this component.
8. After service is complete, perform a system check. The SRS warning lamp in some cases may indicate a malfunction in other circuits of the vehicle's systems. If the control lamp comes on, clear the trouble codes using the HI-SCAN tester (Pro) immediately after repair or replacement of defective parts, including the fuse.
9. When welding on a vehicle, do not disconnect the negative battery cable.
