Slowly turn the steering wheel first clockwise, then counterclockwise.
Note: There should not be any significant resistance to turning.

Remove the side engine support bracket (Fig. 2.87).
Remove the coolant pump pulley.

Remove the upper timing belt cover (Fig. 2.88).
Remove the spark plugs.
Bring the piston of cylinder No.1 to TDC of the compression stroke by turning the engine crankshaft clockwise.
Note: Never turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to align the marks, as this may result in incorrect timing belt tension.

Loosen the pivot bolt and the tensioner roller bracket adjusting bolt (Fig. 2.89).
Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise so that the camshaft sprocket rotates 2 teeth.
Note: Rotating the camshaft to a position where its lobes do not press on the exhaust rocker arms is necessary to create the correct belt tension.

Check that the timing belt is properly engaged with the sprockets (each belt tooth on the sprocket is located in a groove).

First tighten the adjusting bolt, then tighten the tensioner roller pivot bolt (Fig. 2.90).
Check the timing belt tension.
Install the spark plugs.
Install the upper timing belt cover.
Install the coolant pump pulley and engine side mount bracket.
