Checking the oil level (ATF) in automatic transmission
Drive the car until the oil (ATF) in the gearbox does not reach normal operating temperature (70–80°C).
Park the vehicle on a level, level ground.
Press the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding him in each of them for a few seconds) for oil filling (ATF) the entire automatic transmission hydraulic control system and automatic transmission torque converter, and then set the selector lever to the position «N».
Before removing the oil dipstick, clean the area around it of dirt. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the oil in the gearbox (ATF).
Note. If oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission has a burnt smell, this is a sign of contamination with small particles of wear on the friction linings of the gearbox controls. In this case, the gearbox may need to be overhauled.
Normal oil level in automatic transmission (ATF) must be in the range «NOT» oil dipstick. If the level is below the specified level, top up with automatic transmission oil (ATF) to normal levels.
Oil for automatic transmissions (ATF): GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M.
Note. If the oil level (ATF) in an automatic transmission is lower than normal, the oil pump will entrain the oil along with the air, which will lead to the formation of bubbles and foaming of the oil in the hydraulic system. This will reduce the operating pressure in the hydraulic control system, which in turn will lead to a delay when shifting gears (late gear shifting) and slipping of friction clutches or brakes. If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is more than normal, then due to the rotation of the gears of the planetary mechanisms, abundant foaming of the oil will occur (ATF), resulting in the same consequences as in the case of a low oil level (ATF) in automatic transmission. In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oil oxidation (ATF) and varnish deposits that damage valves, couplings and actuators. Foaming also causes oil to be thrown out (ATF) through the automatic transmission crankcase breather, which is mistaken for leaks.
Firmly insert the oil dipstick into the standard hole.
In the event of a major overhaul of an automatic transmission or vehicle operation in difficult road conditions, an automatic transmission oil change (ATF) and an oil filter is required. The procedure for changing the oil in the automatic transmission (ATF) described below. It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.
Attention! It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.
Oil change in automatic transmission (ATF)
You can use the quick oil changer (ATF) in automatic transmission (ATF fluid charger). If there is no such setting, change the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission as described below.
Oil drain (ATF) from the automatic transmission hydraulic system:
- disconnect the hose that connects the gearbox to the oil cooler located inside the engine cooling radiator;
- start the engine and let the oil (ATF) drain through the hose.
Operation conditions:
- the engine is idling;
- the automatic transmission selector lever is in position «N».
Attention! One minute after starting, the engine must be turned off. If all the oil (ATF) flowed out before this moment, the engine must be turned off immediately.
Unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the automatic transmission case and drain the oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission oil pan.
Install the drain plug with gasket in place and tighten the plug to 32 Nm.
Fill in new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the transmission oil filler pipe.
Attention! If the nominal volume of oil for automatic transmission (ATF) not included in the gearbox, stop filling.
Note. Check for contamination in the drained oil (ATF). If the automatic transmission is filled with oil (ATF) more than the nominal volume, again let the oil drain from the gearbox.
Replace external transmission oil filter. If the oil is heavily contaminated (ATF) check the condition of the automatic transmission internal oil filter.
Fill in new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the transmission oil filler pipe.
Connect the automatic transmission oil cooler hose and securely reinstall the oil dipstick. Before installing the automatic transmission oil dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt.
Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
Move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions and then set it to position «N».
Make sure the oil level in the automatic transmission (ATF) is in the range «COLD» («cold automatic transmission») oil dipstick. If the level is lower than specified, then add the required amount of oil for automatic transmission (ATF).
Drive the vehicle for some distance so that the oil temperature (ATF) reached normal working value (70–80°C), then again check the oil level in the automatic transmission (ATF), which must be in the range «NOT» («warm automatic transmission»).

Firmly install the oil dipstick into the automatic transmission oil filler pipe (pic. 3.60).
Replacing the automatic transmission oil filter
Remove the air filter assembly, then using the special tool (oil filter chain wrench etc.) remove the transmission oil filter.
After removing the filter, use cloth gloves or rags to clean the surface of the gearbox from splashes of automatic transmission oil (ATF), dirt, etc.
Clean the mounting surface of the automatic transmission oil filter.

Lubricate with a small amount of clean automatic transmission oil (ATF) surface of the O-ring of the automatic transmission oil filter (pic. 3.61).
Reinstall the automatic transmission oil filter.
Tightening torque: 11–13 Nm.
Check the automatic transmission oil level (ATF) in the gearbox.
