Checking the engine crankshaft speed at idle (Mitsubishi Matrix)

0
Note: Before checking the idle speed, check the serviceability of the spark plugs, injectors, idle speed control valve, and compression in the engine cylinders.

Verification conditions:
  • The coolant temperature should be between 80–85°C;
  • Lighting, electric fan of the engine cooling system and all auxiliary equipment must be switched off;
  • set the gear shift lever to neutral (on vehicles with automatic transmission, set the selector lever to the "P" or "N" position);
  • set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position (only for vehicles with power steering).

Connect a reference tachometer to the primary winding of the ignition coil (follow the instructions in the tachometer operating manual) or connect the HI-SCAN tool to the electrical connector of the data transmission line.

Start the engine and let it idle.

Increase the engine speed to 2000–3000 min⁻¹ for more than 5 s, then let the engine idle for 2 min.

Check the idle speed of the crankshaft using the tachometer

The crankshaft speed at idle must correspond to the values given in Table 2.16 "Data for verification".
