Removal
Raise the car and remove the wheel.
Fig. 3.160. Measuring the axial clearance of a bearing
After removing the hub cover, remove the flange nut and lock washer (Fig. 3.160).
Remove the brake drum.
Remove the brake hoses.
Remove the parking brake assembly.
Remove the parking brake cable.
Remove the four axle-to-lower arm bolts and remove the rear axle, rear wheel guard and rear wheel hub assembly.
Examination
Inspect the rear wheel hub assembly for wear or damage.
Check the rear axle for cracks or damage.
Check the protective cover for excessive deformation or damage.

Measure the axial clearance of the wheel hub bearing by moving the hub in the axial direction.
Limit value: 0.05 or less
If the axial clearance value exceeds the maximum permissible value, it is necessary to tighten the hub nut to the specified tightening torque and then re-measure the axial clearance value.
If the re-measured value is greater than the maximum permissible value, the rear wheel hub assembly with the bearing must be replaced.
Checking the rotational resistance of the wheel hub bearing
To install the hub bearing correctly, it is necessary to turn the wheel hub several times.
Fig. 3.162. Checking the rotational resistance of the wheel hub bearing
Then wind the rope around the hub bolts, attach a spring dynamometer to the end of the rope and pull it horizontally so that the hub turns 90° (Fig. 3.162).
Maximum allowable rotational resistance of rear wheel hub bearing: 27 N or less.
If the measured value of the hub bearing rotational resistance is greater than the maximum permissible value, it is necessary to loosen the hub nut and then tighten it to the specified tightening torque, and then re-measure the value of the hub bearing rotational resistance.
If after adjustment the measured value is greater than the maximum permissible value, then it is necessary to replace the rear wheel hub assembly with the bearing.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Note: After replacing the rear wheel hub assembly, add brake fluid and bleed the brake system.
