Towing a car with a manual transmission
Fig. 1.152. Rules for towing a vehicle with a manual transmission
If you are towing your vehicle with the front wheels raised, make sure the parking brake is released.
When towing a vehicle with the rear wheels raised, make sure the gearbox is in neutral. Also make sure the ignition key is in the ACC position (Accessories). This is to prevent damage to the steering wheel lock mechanism, which is not designed to hold the front wheels in a straight position while the vehicle is being towed. If any of the loaded wheels or suspension components are damaged, a towing dolly must be used.
Towing a car with an automatic transmission
Fig. 1.153. Rules for towing a car with an automatic transmission
Do not tow a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission backwards with the rear wheels raised. This could seriously damage the transmission. If it is necessary to tow the vehicle backwards, the front wheels must be on a towing dolly. When towing the vehicle with the front wheels raised, make sure that the parking brake is released.
Note: Before towing, check the automatic transmission fluid level. If it is below the HOT mark on the dipstick, add fluid. If it is not possible to add fluid, a towing dolly must be used.
Emergency towing

In the event of emergency towing, when it is not possible to use the services of a tow truck, attach the towing cable or chain to one of the towing hooks on the lower front part of the vehicle (Fig. 1.154).

Towing by this method should not be used if the wheels, chassis, axles, steering components or brake system are damaged. Before towing, make sure that the gearbox is in neutral and the ignition key is in the ACC position (when the engine is not running) or in the ON position (when the engine is running). When towing, the driver must be in the vehicle to control it.
Caution! If all four wheels are on the ground when towing, the towing rope must be attached to the front of the vehicle only. Make sure the gearbox is in neutral before towing. It is recommended to tow the vehicle no further than 25 km and not exceed a speed of 50 km/h. Make sure the ignition key is in the "ACC" position and the steering gear is unlocked. The driver must be in the towed vehicle to be able to control the steering wheel and brakes.
