Removal
Fig. 8.47. Removing the negative terminal of the battery
Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery and securely insulate the wire connector (Fig. 8.47).
Attention! Before starting work, wait at least 30 seconds after disconnecting the battery cable.
Fig. 8.48. Removing the steering wheel trim
Remove the steering wheel side covers. Loosen the airbag module mounting bolts (internal hexagon) (Fig. 8.48).
Fig. 8.49. Removing the clock spring
Disconnect the clock spring connector from the airbag module by pulling the connector lock outward (Fig. 8.49).
Caution: Do not apply excessive force when disconnecting the connector.
Fig. 8.50. Removing the airbag module
Remove the driver's airbag module (Fig. 8.50).
Fig. 8.51. Removing the steering wheel
Unscrew the fastening nut and use a puller (09561-11002) remove the steering wheel (Fig. 8.51).
Warning! Do not remove the steering wheel by impact: the column folding mechanism may be damaged in a collision.
Checking the module
If the inspection reveals any defective part, replace the airbag module with a new one.
The old airbag must be detonated using a special procedure.
Warning! Never try to measure the resistance of the airbag fuse, even with a special tester: a sudden airbag explosion is possible, which will lead to an accident.
Check the cushion module lining (pits, cracks, deformation).
Check the body of the airbag module (pits, cracks, deformation).
Check the condition of the connector (deformation of contacts, clamps, twisting of wires).
Check the inflatable module of the cushion (potholes, cracks, deformation).
Install the airbag module onto the steering wheel to check the relative position of the airbag and steering wheel.
Checking the clock spring
If any defective part is found as a result of the inspection, replace the clock spring with a new one.
Check the condition of the connector (deformation of contacts, clamps) and protective tube.
