Pic. 8.77. Removal of a lock ring of an epiploon of a shaft
To replace the compressor shaft seal, remove the compressor from the vehicle and drain the refrigerant.
Remove the clutch hub from the compressor.
Use a pointed object to remove the felt seal from the compressor nose.
Carefully remove debris from the compressor nose cavity by blowing it out with low pressure compressed air. Then, with a lint-free cloth, thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the compressor nose to remove oil and dirt.
Using a puller, remove the shaft seal circlip from the compressor nose.
1. Insert the end of the puller into one of the holes in the retaining ring (view A).
2. Rotate the puller so that the end of the puller and the hole in the circlip are as close as possible to the compressor shaft (view B).
3. Remove the snap ring by quickly pulling the puller up while holding its shaft against the bore wall of the toe (view C).
Pic. 8.78. Installing a special tool
Install the shaft seal remover (09977-33700) onto the compressor shaft and slide it inside the compressor nose until it touches the shaft seal (pic. 8.78).
Insert the head of the tool into the inner diameter of the shaft seal. While holding the tool hex, expand the tool head inside the oil seal by turning the tool handle clockwise, then remove the oil seal by pulling the tool.
Installation
Check the protective ring for burrs and other defects in the new oil seal. Do not install a damaged protective ring.
With a clean, lint-free cloth, wipe the shaft surface and the seal housing in the compressor nose.
Immerse the protective ring and oil seal in clean compressor oil and install the oil seal on the protective ring with the lip towards the large diameter of the protective ring.
Pic. 8.79. Installing the stuffing box on the compressor shaft
Install a protective ring with an oil seal on the end of the compressor shaft (pic. 8.79).
Pic. 8.80. Mandrel installation
Place a mandrel to press the stuffing box on the end of the protective ring, then slowly slide the oil seal in the protective ring until it fits into the socket (pic. 8.80).
Remove the mandrel for pressing the stuffing box and the protective ring from the compressor.
Install a new seal circlip into the bore of the compressor nose and use a puller to drive it into the groove.
Check the tightness of the gland installation by turning the shaft 10 turns behind the coupling hub.
Install a new felt seal in the compressor toe.
Install the clutch hub to the compressor as described earlier in this section.
