Removal
Drain the coolant and disconnect the coolant inlet pipe connecting hose from the coolant pump.
Remove the alternator drive belt and coolant pump pulley.
Remove the timing belt covers and timing belt idler pulley.
Loosen the coolant pump mounting bolts, then remove the generator adjusting bar.
Remove the coolant pump assembly from the cylinder block.
Examination
Inspect each part for cracks, damage or wear, and replace the coolant pump assembly if necessary.
Check the bearing for damage, excessive noise during operation, and slow rotation, and replace the coolant pump assembly if necessary.
Fig. 2.175. Checking the coolant pump
Check the pump for fluid leaks. Leaks through port "C" (Fig. 2.175) indicate a leak in the pump shaft seals. If leaks are present, replace the pump.
Installation
Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and cylinder block.
Install the valve timing covers.
Install the water pump pulley and drive belt, adjust the drive belt tension.
Fill the system with coolant.
Start the engine and check for fluid leaks.
Fig. 2.176. Coolant pump mounting bolts
Install the water pump with a new gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque (Fig. 2.176).
Tightening torque of the bolts securing the water pump to the cylinder block:
- 1.6L engines - bolts "A" 12-15 Nm, bolts "B" 20-27 Nm;
- 1.8 l engines - 20–27 N·m.
(bolt length 28 mm)
