The content of toxic components in exhaust gases (CO, CH, NOx) is limited by a combination of design features of the vehicle engine and special control elements in the fuel system.

The combustion chamber shape, intake manifold, valve timing and ignition system form the main control system. Additional control devices include a catalytic converter and oxygen sensors that monitor the composition of the fuel-air mixture.
